Hungry for the “How”

We are all hungry for the “how.”

We want it desperately.

A list of the exact steps we need to take to get the thing that we want. The new job. The promotion. The house. The schedule. The lifestyle. The money. The feeling. The mastery of a skill. The experience. The accolade. The breaking of a habit.

So we don’t waste our time.

So we don’t mess up or fail.

So we get there as quickly as possible.

So we can feel good and certain along the way.

The human brain craves certainty because certainty feels safer.

But when you are trying to do or create something new in your life, certainty just isn’t available right then. Only hindsight can reveal it.

So you have to let the full picture of the “how” be uncertain.

There is, however, one thing we can be certain of: action creates clarity. Clarity feels more certain.

Inaction creates doubt and confusion. Inaction feels stagnant. Inaction feeds uncertainty.

So if you crave more certainty in trying to reach your goals, whatever they may… Decide to experiment.

Create a hypothesis.

Take action to test that hypothesis.

Gather data.

Make a new hypothesis based on that data.

Rinse and repeat.
